Meta starts fresh round of layoffs, fires software engineers and tech employees

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has begun another round of layoffs as it aims to reduce costs. The company has already fired around 21,000 employees, and it appears to be laying off even more workers. Various Meta employees on LinkedIn have reported that the company has started to let go of people in technical positions, including software engineering, graphics programming, user experience, and other roles. A spokesperson from Meta confirmed the new layoffs to CNBC. A worker who was laid off said that the layoffs were carried out in teams that focus on products. Moreover, Meta is planning to give pink slips to people who work in business-facing roles like finance, legal, and HR.
The recent wave of layoffs at Meta has also impacted gameplay programmers who work on the company’s virtual and augmented reality products, according to sources. In addition, an affected employee indicated that other technical teams that weren’t affected in April could potentially be impacted in May. A Facebook business program manager announced their layoff on LinkedIn, stating, “I woke up this morning to the unfortunate news that I was one of the many laid-off from Meta today.”

As a reminder, Meta previously laid off 11,000 workers in November 2022 and then announced additional job cuts in March 2023. The CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has expressed regret for the layoffs in an email sent to affected employees. The company is currently cutting 10,000 more jobs, which will bring the total number of layoffs to 21,000. The number of employees affected by the latest round of layoffs at Meta in April is currently unknown. Some reports suggest that up to 4,000 more workers may be fired, but no official information has been released yet. In previous statements, CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited economic downturn and slow growth as reasons behind the layoffs. Meta has experienced low revenue growth and over-hiring in recent years due to business needs. However, with the company now struggling financially, it is taking steps to remove employees.
