Meesho lays off 300 employees, shuts down grocery arm ‘Superstore’ in India


Meesho, India’s fastest growing internet commerce company, reportedly closed its supermarket chain Superstore in more than 90% of Indian towns (apart from Nagpur and Mysore), leading to the loss of numerous jobs. Meesho Superstore was available in six states Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. After Meesho Superstore closed, approximately 300 employees lost their employment. The business declined to comment on the situation when contacted.

For individuals who were let go, Meesho provided a two-month salary as severance pay.

In order to emphasise its continuous commitment to meeting consumer demand for everyday necessities in Tier 2 markets and beyond. The social commerce platform, Meesho rebranded Farmiso to Superstore in April. The company fired more than 150 workers in the same month, primarily from Farmiso, in an effort to incorporate its grocery business into the main programme.

In the initial epidemic wave, the Bangalore based platform Meesho let go of more than 200 people. This time, the business decided to stop operating in the majority of the cities due to poor revenue and a huge financial burn.

The company looks forward to integrating Meesho Superstore with its core app, said Vidit Aatrey, Founder and CEO, Meesho.

He further added “What started as a pilot in Karnataka is now seeing positive traction across six states. Driven by our user-first mindset, the integration will provide millions of Meesho users a unified shopping experience, while giving us an opportunity to drive stronger synergies across areas such as customer acquisition, technology and product and talent.”
