IPL becomes India’s first unicorn with $1.1B valuation in 2008: Report

According to a recent news report citing D&P Advisory’s analysis of the Indian Premier League, the cricket tournament was valued at $1.1 billion in 2008, making it India’s first unicorn in the year of its launch.

The advisory, which had previously announced that IPL had reached a valuation of $10.9 billion, is now preparing to publish a new report titled “IPL: The Pioneer of Indian Unicorns.”

As per the study, D&P Advisory considered the worth of media rights, title sponsorships, and associate sponsorships of IPL to estimate its overall value from the years leading up to 2014. The report revealed that D&P’s analysis highlighted that the broadcasting rights of the competition garnered Rs 486 crore in 2008. Furthermore, the rights for title sponsorship and associate sponsorship also generated Rs 36 crore and Rs 48 crore, respectively.

The report states that the valuation of IPL has gradually risen over the years, primarily due to the increasing fees for broadcasting and sponsorships. In 2009, the tournament’s value surged to $1.7 billion, which further increased to $2.2 billion in 2010 when the league included 60 matches. When the number of games was expanded to 74 in 2011, the valuation of IPL reached $2.7 billion.
