Delhi Govt To Support Startups Providing Alternatives To Single-Use Plastics, says Environment Minister

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on April 29 said the city government will assisting startups in providing alternatives to single-use plastic to the best of its potential. He added that a mass movement is required to create awareness against single-use plastic items. “The Delhi Govt will assist startups offering alternatives to single-use plastic, for which an action plan has been prepared. The city Govt has drawn up a framework for adopting several alternative models,” Rai said.
He was addressing a training programme on ‘Single-Use Plastic and Plastic Waste Management’ organized in collaboration with the UNEP/United Nations Environment Programme.

The Minister added that plastic forks, straws, polythene, plastic glasses, and other single-use plastics that cannot be reused are discarded, and in such a situation, adequate information is needed for the effective management of plastic waste, not only for those who produce it but also for those who pick it up and manage it.
“The UNEP training program will provide better information to the people working in this field. Also, it will be easier to adopt the legal process related to it,” the Minister said.As per the Central Pollution Control Board, Single-use plastic items will not be allowed in the country from July 1, 2022. Although the plastic waste management segment still remains fragmented and informal, many startups such as Banyan Nation, Lucro Plastecycle, Recykal, Scrapshala, ZeroPlast Labs, Beco, among others, are working to manage plastic waste
