Reliance Industries, India’s largest retailer, wants the government to tighten ecommerce marketplace rules.


Reliance informed authorities in a closed-door government meeting that India needs special legislation to ensure “non-discriminatory” treatment of marketplace website vendors.

Through the draught ecommerce policy, the government proposed tightening the rules for ecommerce marketplaces like Amazon India and Walmart-owned Flipkart last year.

Reliance Retail, which is led by Mukesh Ambani and is one of India’s top retailers and a newcomer to the ecommerce club, has urged for stricter regulation of ecommerce marketplaces.

According to Reuters, the business informed authorities in a closed-door government meeting that India needs special legislation to ensure “non-discriminatory” treatment of marketplace website merchants.

While Reliance did not name any of the marketplaces, Amazon and Flipkart dominate the Indian online market. Indian merchants have accused the ecommerce behemoths of violating India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) policies, giving preferential treatment to sellers created through joint ventures, distorting search results, and creating an anti-competitive environment.
