Medulance | Making Ambulance More Accessible

“Once you start making an impact and start generating value for your customers, there is nothing more fulfilling.” – Pranav Bajaj, Co-Founder, Medulance

Personal experiences motivated us to start working on this idea and find workable solutions. Since Ola and Uber had come up already, we thought why can’t something similar be done about ambulances, said Pranav Bajaj, co-founder of Medulance, in an exclusive interview with Startup Story Media.

Starting out Medulance

Ever-since starting Medulance, Pranav has used whatever he had learned before and that had definitely helped him in starting his own company. As soon as the idea was established, they started planning things out.

We could see the challenges that existed in the industry. In 2016-17 itself, we started working on how to ensure that people get high quality reliable medical transportation and ambulatory services, Pranav tells Startup Story Media. This industry is very much disorganized and we had to figure out many things. Once we highlighted and tackled these problems, we asked our families for a small loan to kickstart our business.

I always wanted to do something of my own and when this idea came to us, we decided that we wanted to do nothing else at that point in time. We had no idea where the journey would take us but we were pretty sure that we wanted to do this, he adds.

India had always faced challenges in terms of medical assistance. As if lack of enough doctors wasn’t already a problem, reaching those doctors in case of emergency was challenging in itself.

Pranav told Startup Story Media that not having instant access to an ambulance in the time of need had personally affected his co-founder Ravjot Arora who lost his grandfather back in 2010 due to this very issue.

Having faced this challenge in a time of crisis on a personal level, Ravjot and Pranav wanted to solve this issue for Delhi through Medulance, India’s first GPS based platform which allows access to the nearest ambulance. It allows easy access to emergency medical services as soon as possible.

The website mentions, Our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way India looks at ambulances and first point medical attentions and to touch lives. Our values serve as a compass for our actions and describe how we behave in the world.

Using Medulance is as easy as downloading the app on a mobile phone or accessing its services through the website. During the COVID-19, Medulance has assisted over 10,000 Covid patients, becoming almost a boon in this crisis.

Running a business is different

Pranav shares his experience of starting his own business after having worked for Zomato previously, which is famous for its hustle. He said that working at Zomato had given him a great deal of experience and whatever he learned there is something he tries to inculcate in his own team.

He says, “Experience of working in Zomato helped me inculcate this same thing in our own organisation as well. Company culture in our office is pretty open and informal. This has its own benefits and problems but we make sure that the culture in the company is pretty informal and yet the work gets done.”

Pranav tells Startup Story Media, “When you are starting a business, you’re pretty much alone. It helps you develop your own personality and recognise your strengths and weaknesses. Even after working in my own company for 3 years, I’m still learning.”

Message for others

Pranav agrees that running a startup comes with its pressures and he tries to deal with it by playing tennis 5 days a week at least. “Staying fit and healthy is important,” he says.

Pranav believes that the most important leadership quality that a person needs to develop is patience. He also emphasises on creating a good founding team as a leader. “Having the right set of people to execute your ideas are as important as you having those ideas,” he tells Startup Story Media. He also suggests focusing on generating good revenues for the company as it’s important for its constant and sustainable growth.

In his message to young entrepreneurs, Pranav suggests that they should keep the fundamentals about what they want to do with their organisations always intact. They should not lose them over the period of time for revenue, profit or anything.

He further said that there is no one success mantra for business, otherwise, there would be no struggles and failures. “Even though there are failures, every failure teaches us something,” he says.
