Purabi Sarkar and Startup Story had an immensely knowledgeable and insightful conversation about the current scenario of Startups and the changes that can be made to  improve the versatility of the startups. Purabi, an enthusiastic, opportunistic, and passionate person in real life. She took us through her journey of being a director of different organizations to being a director of her own startup; her experience in mentoring various startups.

She completed her masters in computer science from BITS. Purabi has done her masters from Indian Institute of Management from Kozhikode. She has also done a course on Strategic Management from Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Moreover, she is a six sigma black belt. She had mentored a lot of projects encompassing quality and statistics.

Furthermore, Purabi had worked with esteemed organizations like Tata Consultancy Services, GE and PWC. She was the founder of the Association of Organic Farmers. She has done consulting for a few organizations like ODA, IABT, HRS, etc. Purabi has her own Startup named as TARE (Tirambhapur askote raj ecosystem pvt ltd).  She is on board of a few other companies that focus on sustainable development and business development. She’s guest faculty at NIMSME (National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises). At times she teaches strategy and entrepreneurship at various business schools as a guest faculty. She has also been a part of few rural entrepreneurship programmes that happen in Uttarakhand Remote areas. Her role is mentoring, moulding and increasing local potential, and creating rural entrepreneurship.

Speaking with Startup Story, she shared that product development, business development, plotting the canvas, measuring the risk “I am very fond of design thinking which is a human centric approach that is something I like to do”, and building strategies fascinates her a lot. Besides that, Purabi Sarkar loves to play instruments, reading books and watching documentaries.

Talking about her role as a Business Development, Purabi said creating a value chain has been her forte. She’s basically working on livelihood in one region where business development is highly important because it does affect the bottom of the pyramid people also which is the rural people. Elaborating the same she stated an example, “If it’s an organic product which goes to an urban consumer, tier 1 or tier 2 city consumers then creating an entire value chain  till the last mile delivery needs to be planned nicely and has to be seen the hapless hiccups because sending from remote rural setting is not an easy work. I am basically involved in the business development and value chain analysis, and risk mapping, plotting the strategies,” said Purabi.

Purabi’s way of working with the startups

“The idea is to identify the gaps.” She believes it is important to have a co-creating environment wherein everyone discusses, brainstorms, figures out and works on gap analysis. Sometimes there are certain situations, where doing a competitive analysis of similar work done by other startups or organizations is immensely imperative. “So, I basically see whether competitive framework analysis is done or not. And, look for models adopted by other organizations which are a bit more ahead than the current startup. Furthermore, I try to map out how the gap can be fulfilled. Are there any other factors that can be adopted or included in the current business plan? If it’s not there then how the startup can approach in a way that it can be achieved.” Purabi claims for a startup to scale it’s highly important to do a certain kind of mapping with the help of market analysis. She further added another significant aspect is to map a risk. As the risk is there since the first day itself.

“Rather than creating a brand it’s more important to go through your service, generate revenue and then work towards the brand,” said Purabi.

Thoughts about Startup Story

Purabi liked the idea of creating business consulting and services for the startups to grow which many startups need  a lot. “The people who built a startup are obviously very passionate and risk takers. But they also need help which is lacking in the current industry space,” said Purabi. Another thing which intrigued her AI based machine learning. She believes more usage of blockchain into different areas where the startups are working probably would lead to a much better growth rather than a slower growth.

A message for the readers

“Get inspired by your startup ecosystem that is growing in India because that’s an amazing risk-taking inspiration,” Purabi Sarkar.
