Google has pledged $8 million via Google.org to strengthen India’s AI Centers of Excellence, targeting applications in healthcare, agriculture, education, and sustainable urban development.
The grants support four key institutions:
TANUH at IISc Bangalore for AI-driven non-communicable disease management
Airawat at IIT Kanpur for urban governance solutions
AI Centre of Excellence for Education at IIT Madras to improve learning outcomes
ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar for agriculture and farmer welfare tools
Additional funding includes $2 million for the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay and $400,000 for Health Foundation Models using MedGemma, plus partnerships with the National Health Authority for medical records standardization and health facility mapping.
These efforts complement Google’s $15 billion AI infrastructure commitment and align with India’s goal to develop AI solutions tailored for local challenges across critical sectors.
