Google commits $8m to support India’s AI centers of excellence

Google has pledged $8 million via Google.org to strengthen India’s AI Centers of Excellence, targeting applications in healthcare, agriculture, education, and sustainable urban development.

The grants support four key institutions:

  • TANUH at IISc Bangalore for AI-driven non-communicable disease management

  • Airawat at IIT Kanpur for urban governance solutions

  • AI Centre of Excellence for Education at IIT Madras to improve learning outcomes

  • ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar for agriculture and farmer welfare tools

Additional funding includes $2 million for the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay and $400,000 for Health Foundation Models using MedGemma, plus partnerships with the National Health Authority for medical records standardization and health facility mapping.

These efforts complement Google’s $15 billion AI infrastructure commitment and align with India’s goal to develop AI solutions tailored for local challenges across critical sectors.
