His view on the Ed-tech industry

The edtech industry has enabled the ecosystem of education to grow rapidly across universities, schools, and autonomous institutions, during pandemic years 2020-21, Edtech industry stepped up its efforts to spread access of learning to a very large section of underserved learners  Its growth has proven that technology is becoming an important part of education delivery.  India’s population is in the age bracket of 15-24 years is about 500 million people. Edtech industry with University partnership had reached  out to a large section of society for quality education using online means.  Earlier quality education was available only in the face-to-face model . Online education with Edtech companies support  can now be extended to much larger population.

The education market was estimated to be worth 117 billion 2 years ago and it is likely to reach 225 billion by the financial year 2025. We have a large number of school-going children, about 250 million. The number of colleges is around 40,000+ and universities is about 900+. Indian ed-tech market is  second only to the US market, and is growing rapidly. The pandemic years led the proliferation of the edtech industry, as there was no other way but to adopt online means.

The two areas that are the driving factors of the edtech industry post-pandemic are:

  • Skill development
  • Employability education leading to award of a degree.

Both these skills are intertwined and co-dependent. Skill development leads to a greater employability rate, and employability also leads to the development of a valuable skillset.  Universities and leading autonomous institution will do great service to the learners if they embrace cutting edge technology developed by Edtech industry . This is a win – win situation and a need of the hour for India which aims to increase its GER (Gross Enrollment Ration) currently 27% to 50% by the year 2030, as enunciated in National Education Policy 2020.
