UIDAI aims to explore partnerships with private firms to further Digital India Initiative

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Saurabh Garg of UIDAI has expressed interest in investigating a partnership with private parties to advance the Digital India programme.

“Although the issues of privacy and consent remain paramount, we look forward to partnering with various private sector players for Digital India,” said Garg.

On the sidelines of the Global Fintech Fest 2022, he made the remarks in a fireside chat with Rajiv Aggarwal, the head of public policy at Meta India.

Garg boasted of the scope of Aadhaar, claiming that 650 state-sponsored and 300 government initiatives had implemented the project for unique identification.

Speaking to the group, Garg added that Aadhaar was being used to deliver financial services efficiently. He added that the agency was collaborating with authorities to increase its presence in the fintech industry.

“We receive over 8 crore authentication requests daily, with almost 40% going to payment systems that support Aadhaar. Therefore, the banking industry has made use of the ecosystem. We are extending our reach to the fintech and NBFC sectors in the future by collaborating with regulators like the RBI, said the UIDAI chief.

According to the top official, 1.34 billion Indians have registered on the identification database in the ten years since it was established. The project was launched in 2009 under the direction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, which is important to mention (MeitY).

“Every adult inhabitant of the nation has an Aadhaar at this point unless they live in a remote area,” continued Garg.

The benefits that Aadhaar offers include deduplication, removing ghost beneficiaries, reducing fund leakage, and authentication, he continued.

His comments follow the UIDAI’s introduction of the fingerprint “liveliness” function on its Aadhaar Enabled Payment System a few days ago (AEPS). The new approach will make the technology more sensitive to tell whether the fingerprint being used is from an alive person or not.
