T-AIM initiates the “Mobility AI Grand Challenge”, calls for startups to participate

The Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) has announced the “Mobility AI Grand Challenge” on behalf of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). T-AIM is looking for entrepreneurs to create unique AI solutions to identify and classify potholes in the city depending on their severity through this competition. To promote innovation for GHMC, the Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) announced the Mobility AI Grand Challenge. This initiative is in collaboration with Capgemini. Earlier last month, the two completed a similar task for the Forest Department.

Their goal is to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI), and video feed (40 frames per second or greater) from certain roads in Hyderabad to examine and look for potholes. AI must be used to identify and classify the potholes in the video feed. Pothole severity can be classified depending on the surface area and depth of the pothole.

The project is now accepting applications. Innovators will be chosen based on their approach note, and those that are chosen will have four weeks to produce a Proof of Concept. The selected entrepreneur will receive mentorship assistance as well as a grant of up to Rs 20 lakh towards the development of a prospective pilot project with GHMC. In this initiative, TiHAN, India’s first autonomous navigation facility at IIT Hyderabad, and INAI-IHub Data, the applied AI research centre at IIIT-H, are partners. While TiHAN will provide intellectual assistance, INAI-IHub Data will supply the data collecting platform, Bodhyaan 1.0. The deadline for submitting challenge approach ideas is September 16. In November, the winner will be announced.

IT Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said, “ Governments and innovators should increasingly collaborate to solve social problems through open innovation. I am confident that this initiative of T-AIM will help GHMC use AI-based solutions to improve road safety.”
