Urban mining startup Metastable Materials launches its R&D and innovation centre in Bengaluru
- ByStartupStory | August 2, 2022
Metastable Materials, a startup in urban mining, recently opened its first R&D and Innovation Centre in Bengaluru with the many goals of finishing tool fabrication, design and growth, and course optimization, among other key corporate strategic areas.
Shubham Vishvakarma, Founder & Head of Process Engineering, Metastable Materials said, “Given that the majority of the metals extracted by us from Li-ion batteries have an overall trade deficit, are currently experiencing a supply crunch in the domestic market, and are being imported from other countries at higher prices, we foresee a huge opportunity for unfulfilled demand to be tapped into by offering these commodities at a lower price than the market.”
The company’s process engineering team will be able to undertake routine trials to improve the effectiveness, yield, and purity of the various output materials obtained using proprietary technology, which will open up chances for continuous improvement. By the end of 2022, the facility will have doubled in size and be able to process up to 600 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries that have reached the end of their useful lives annually.

Additionally, Metastable Materials has developed chemical-free technology that can safely and effectively remove valuable materials including copper, aluminium, cobalt, nickel, and lithium from lithium-ion batteries. Through a variety of cell chemistries, Metastable’s proprietary technology may provide up to 90% restoration of constituent supply for LiBs.
About Metastable Materials
