Meesho joins ONDC to assist in bringing together buyers and local vendors

Meesho, an e-commerce platform, announced on Wednesday that it has connected with the government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to support the linking of customers with nearby vendors.

The government is implementing an ONDC pilot programme in which all participants in the e-commerce ecosystem would make it easier for consumers and sellers to buy products and services online at fair pricing. In the upcoming months, the Meesho pilot will be introduced in Bengaluru before being gradually expanded to other cities. As a result, customers who have registered on ONDC will have access to a list of goods that Meesho has available on ONDC.

“The integration will support our efforts to democratise internet commerce for everyone, with a shared purpose to empower small sellers and support hyperlocal enterprises. To achieve a flawless user experience and a seamless connection, we have been closely collaborating with ONDC, said Vidit Aatrey, founder and CEO of Meesho. By bringing more customers online, he claimed that ONDC will also be crucial to the growth of India’s e-commerce industry.

“At ONDC, we want to build an open e-commerce environment that serves everyone. New-age platforms like Meesho will be strong network participants for ONDC in this journey because e-commerce is still relatively new in India, according to ONDC Chief Executive Officer T Koshy. SoftBank-backed Meesho asserts that Tier II and higher cities account for 80% of its 14 crore annual transacting clients. Over 8 lakh sellers have registered with the website, of whom 40% are from Tier 2 and higher cities. The integration with ONDC will strengthen the company’s efforts in that direction, according to the statement, which noted that Meesho has always focused on making e-commerce more inclusive.
