Maharashtra Tops the EV Sales Charts Under the FAME-II Scheme

Maharashtra leads the way in total sales of electric cars that have taken advantage of the FAME II subsidy, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

According to official data, the top five states combined account for more than 56% of the 0.85 million electric vehicles purchased via the plan, which include two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-rickshaws, and four-wheelers.

The trend of the top states is similar to registrations of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, with one exception: Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for 11% of all vehicle registrations based on data to March 31st, 2019 (when it was predominantly petrol and diesel) and was ranked second, has dropped out of the top five in the electric vehicle category.

Rajasthan has taken its place at the top of the pecking order.

With 39,572 electric vehicle sales, Uttar Pradesh lags far behind in its electric vehicle conversion, accounting for only 4.6 percent of total electric vehicle sales and 3.4 percent of electric two-wheeler sales.

Rajasthan, on the other hand, has sold 60,584 automobiles, the majority of which are two-wheelers. Under FAME II, only 45 electric four wheelers were sold. The state’s percentage of total electric car sales is estimated to be 7.1%.

While Maharashtra maintains number one on both lists, Karnataka has surpassed Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in the rankings for electric cars (in comparison to the percentage of registrations in March-end 2019, when ICE-powered vehicles predominated) to grab the second spot.

Mumbai Maharashtra

That is unsurprising given that Bangalore is the country’s software hub and home to two major businesses, Ola Electric and Ather Energy.

With 2,864 electric four wheelers (including passenger automobiles), Delhi led the way, followed by Karnataka (1,359), Maharashtra (735), Telangana (427), Haryana (369), and West Bengal (197).

According to available FAME II subsidy statistics, the six states dominate sales, accounting for 93% of the 6,397 electric four wheelers sold in the country.

However, because not all four-wheelers are qualified for the FAME II programme — for example, many electric vehicle manufacturers are not — FAME II-led sales do not represent total sales of electric four-wheelers.

The government has set aside Rs 10,000 crore for electric car subsidies under the FAME II initiative. The plan has been extended till the end of March 2024.

According to government figures, the total distribution to date is Rs 3,775 crore. The new budget allocates Rs 5,500 crore through March FY24.

Subsidies vary greatly depending on the vehicle. They can vary from Rs 20,000 for an electric two-wheeler and Rs 3 lakh for a sedan. However, the average subsidy across all categories is roughly Rs 44,000 per car. Electric two-wheelers account for 89% of all electric vehicle sales.

Maharashtra has embraced electric two-wheelers quicker than any other state, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The five states account for 60% of total sales.
