J&K outperforms all UTs in startups: Report

In the ranking of “states on support to startup ecosystems,” Jammu and Kashmir has come out on top among the Union Territories and north-eastern states, according to Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary for Science and Technology.

He said in the past few years, 84 startups had been established in J&K. “The states and the Union Territories have been classified into five categories, including best performers, top performers, leaders, aspiring leaders and emerging startup ecosystems. J&K, which has been clubbed with UTs and the north-eastern states including those having less than one crore population, has emerged as the top performer while Meghalaya as the best performer,” Bhagat said.

Bhat opened the Himalayan Chapter of Northern India at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu, in a significant development in the field of very large scale integration (VLSI) of microchips and manufacturing. He claimed that the new chapter would give IIT, Jammu, the chance to serve as the centre of research on VLSI, which is widely used in all computing and control devices, including smartphones, cameras, cars, and drones.

All universities, research and development organisations, IITs, NITs, and IISc from states like J&K, Leh, Himachal Pradesh, and others will receive assistance from the northern chapter.

The Commissioner Secretary described startups as a game-changer for economic growth and stated that the government was resolute in supporting brilliant ideas and solutions with incubation and seed funding.

“Our aim is to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and startups in J&K and the synergies between industrial and academic establishments which will encourage and empower young innovators and boost private investment in start-ups,” he said.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed in this direction by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu and the J&K Science, Technology & Innovation Council, a scientific organisation operating under the auspices of the J&K government’s Science & Technology Department.
