Jabil, Apple Supplier, commences Airpods production in India

Jabil Inc, a crucial supplier for Apple, has initiated the production of Airpods components in India and has also started exporting the enclosure for the Airpods to China and Vietnam.
This means that India will be now responsible for manufacturing iPhones as well as Airpods. According to sources, Apple is relocating its manufacturing base in India due to trade restrictions in the US and disruptions caused by COVID-19 in China.
Jabil’s Indian operation, which is located in a 858,000 sq ft facility in Pune, employs over 2,500 workers. Recently, The Indian Government gave primary approval for 14 chinese suppliers of Apple, including Luxshare Precision Industry, Sunny Optical Technology Group, Han’s Laser Technology Industry Group, and Shenzhen YUTO Packaging Technology, to set up assembly plants in the country. This news comes two weeks after the initial approval was granted.

Previously , Union Minister Piyush Goyal shared that Apple plans to increase its production to 25% from the current 5-7% in India. He stated “They (Apple) are already at about 5-7% of their manufacturing in India. If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25% of their manufacturing. They launched the most recent models from India, manufactured in India,”
According to research from Canalys, Apple dominated the global true wireless stereo (TWS) market with 31% share in Q3 2022, shipping a total of 23.8 million TWS units. In addition, the tech giant is reportedly speeding up its plans to establish retail outlets and flagship stores in India, with plans to launch one store each in Mumbai and Delhi in the coming weeks.
Apple announced 12 job roles in India.The roles include technical specialist, business expert, senior manager, store leader and ‘genius’ among others. Back in December 2022, India exported more than INR 10K Cr smartphones. Of this, Apple exported $1 Bn smartphones from India. In the previous month (November), it also surpassed smartphone manufacturer Samsung, in exporting mobile phones from the country.
