India now has 80,000 startups, up from 350 in 2014: Union Minister Jitendra Singh


On Thursday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh claimed that the country’s startup movement had gained momentum and resulted in the creation of over 80,000 businesses, up from about 350 in 2014.

Singh asserted that the startup movement in India has gained momentum as a result due to the push from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He made this statement after officially opening the National Genome Editing and Training Centre (NGETC) in Mohali, Punjab.

The minister stated that as the startup movement has gained momentum in India and that this quantum leap in the number of startups must also be reflected in agri and biotech because these sectors have not yet been fully explored and tapped into by Indian entrepreneurs and youth.

He insisted on raising awareness of the lucrative employment opportunities and revenue streams available in agri-tech entrepreneurship.

“It will also empower young researchers by providing them with training and guidance about its know-how and application in crops. In the current climatic scenario, improving crops for better nutrition and tolerance to the changing environmental condition is a significant challenge.

“Genome editing could be a promising technology that Indian research could adapt to offer the desired tailor-made traits in crops. NABI (National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute) has shown ability and can expand the genome editing tools to vast arrays of crops, including banana, rice, wheat, tomato, maize and millets,” he said.

NABI, under the department of Biotechnology, is focused on research at the intersection of agricultural, food, and nutritional biotechnology.
