India Leads in AI Skill Penetration, Young Employability on the Rise


India has emerged as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) skill penetration and talent concentration, earning a score of 3.09. The nation’s installed talent base of 4.16 lakh AI professionals as of August 2023 positions it well to meet the current demand of approximately 6.29 lakh, a figure expected to rise to one million by 2026. These insights were revealed in the India Skills Report 2024, released by Wheebox, a remote proctored assessments and consulting firm.

According to the report, India’s overall young employability has improved to 51.25% compared to the previous year. Notably, states with large talent pools such as Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana boast the highest concentration of highly employable youth. Haryana leads the pack with 76.47% of test takers scoring 60% and above on the WNET.

Nirmal Singh, Chief Convenor of India Skills Report and founder, CEO of Wheebox, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among government bodies, businesses, and educational institutions to navigate the transformative journey of addressing challenges with a focus on inclusion. Singh highlighted successful youth upskilling initiatives and advancements in digital infrastructure as examples of such collaborative efforts.

The report also highlighted the talent concentration within the age range of 22-25 years, with Uttar Pradesh leading at 74.77%, closely followed by Maharashtra at 71.97%. Across the top 10 cities, the overall employability rate within this age group stands at 63.58%. These findings underscore the regional variations and demographic factors influencing the employability landscape in India.

Commenting on the evolving technology landscape, Sachin Jain, Country Manager of ETS, India, South Asia, emphasized the role of AI in learning science, highlighting the importance of personalization, analytics, intuitive interpretations, and actionable insights. Jain emphasized that achieving these goals is not possible without the application and amplification of AI. As the largest assessment organization globally, ETS is well-positioned to contribute to this evolving landscape.
