IIT Mandi Startup Creates AI-Powered Solution for Early Detection of Respiratory and Genetic Disorders

According to officials, an IIT-Mandi startup called Dectrocel Healthcare has created a low-cost medical imaging solution powered by Artificial Intelligence that has the potential to revolutionize the early detection of respiratory abnormalities, hepatobiliary diseases, and genetic disorders in children. The platform created by Dectrocel Healthcare allows for the uploading of digital and analogue chest X-ray images and photographs of children, and within a few minutes, the algorithm can diagnose respiratory abnormalities that often result in significant mortalities, such as tuberculosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Saumya Shukla, who is the co-founder of Dectrocel Healthcare and Research Private Limited, stated that in the healthcare industry, the rise of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) would bring about a super-intelligence era, where humans and machines would expand into the universe. According to Shukla, data has become the new oil and currency, but the focus has now shifted to developing systems that can make sense of data.

Saumya Shukla, the co-founder of Dectrocel Healthcare and Research Private Limited, highlighted that in India, a country with a population of 1.4 billion, medical reports suggest that one out of every five people is suffering from a chronic disease. Shukla added that hepatobiliary diseases, including malignancies, and respiratory ailments such as interstitial lung disease (ILD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer, are a global health crisis, with most of the available diagnostic solutions focused on late-stage diseases.

According to Shukla, early detection is crucial for preventing chronic diseases as they often do not have significant symptoms in the early stages. Therefore, Dectrocel Healthcare is striving to develop cost-effective diagnostic solutions that can detect such diseases at an early stage and improve the chances of successful treatment and positive health outcomes for patients.

According to the researchers, the tools being developed will allow for early detection, improve access to specialized healthcare, reduce misdiagnosis rates, and address affordability concerns for the general public. “Technology has the potential to provide specialized healthcare at an affordable cost to the farthest corners of the world. Dectrocel Healthcare has selected Uttar Pradesh as our starting point to create this impact at scale and then expand nationally and globally,” said Shukla.
