IIT Kanpur’s SIIC Reviews Joint Initiative with MoHUA for Garbage-Free Cities


The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur’s Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) recently conducted its first programme review committee meeting in Noida, as part of its joint initiative with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The meeting was attended by Binay Kumar Jha, Director of Swacch Bharat Mission, Ankush Sharma, Professor in Charge of Innovation and Incubation at IIT Kanpur, and other officials from both the institute and MoHUA.

The joint initiative between Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) called ‘Startup Gateway for Garbage Free Cities’ was discussed during the programme review committee meeting. The CEO of SIIC, Nikhil Agarwal, addressed the meeting and reiterated the collaborative goal of the institute with MoHUA. 

During the programme review committee meeting, SIIC CEO Nikhil Agarwal highlighted the objective of the joint initiative with MoHUA, stating that it aims to extend support to startups operating at the convergence of technology and social innovation. This support will enable them to address India’s waste management challenges and drive improvements in waste management efficiency, social impact, and transparency in the waste-to-value chain.

During the review meeting, it was disclosed that a total of 20 startups have been chosen for the inaugural cohort of the programme. Subsequently, the programme committee conducted a thorough assessment of the progress made by each of these 20 startups. Officials further revealed that each startup will receive Rs 20 lakh as funding to support their technology and business development endeavors. Additionally, they will gain access to valuable resources such as mentorship, lab facilities, and business connections.

The selected startups for the programme include Citygen Technology, Nellikka Complete Solutions, WeVOIS Labs, Jivoule Biofuels, ARC-Robotics, Strawcture Eco, Spruce Up Industries, Trashback India, Recircle, Quality Décor Dzines, Angirus, Uneako, Aloe Ecell, MiniMines Cleantech, MuddleArt, RCube Recycling, Celligo Natural Fibres, PadCare Labs, EcoKaari, and Ecowrap.
