Gorilla Technologies Launches Superchat, an AI Chat App with Virtual Characters Powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Gorilla Technologies, the company behind popular iPhone customization app Brass and sticker maker StickerHub, has launched Superchat, a new AI chat app that allows iOS users to engage with virtual characters powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Unlike other generic AI chat apps, Superchat’s characters include notable historical figures, public domain works, classic stories, fairy tales, and representations of different professions. The chat app aims to make AI technology accessible to everyone, not just people who know how to write great prompts, according to Gorilla Technologies CEO Guglielmo Faglioni.

“The goal is to make AI technology accessible to everyone, not just people who know how to write great prompts,” said Faglioni. “And we think this app will be a great tool for kids who want to learn more about historical figures by chatting to cool characters like Shakespeare.”

Users can have multiple conversations with different AI chatbots at the same time within the messaging app. While many of the characters are available for free, some can be unlocked through a premium subscription, starting at $1.35 per week if users choose an annual subscription (~$70/year). A weekly subscription is priced at $6.99, which may be deemed too expensive, especially for children.

Gorilla Technologies CEO noted that Superchat’s subscription prices are meant to help cover the costs of using OpenAI’s APIs, and the app supports Family Sharing, allowing multiple users to share one subscription.

However, some users have commented that the characters could use more configuration. While they introduce themselves as the character or persona in question, their later interactions do not reflect the expected speech patterns of the character. The characters are aware of their own history and include that in their conversations, but their speaking style is more of a generic AI. Despite this, the app’s concept to put a face on an AI and have it interact in the style of the character is interesting.

Superchat, the new AI chat app from Gorilla Technologies, allows iOS users to chat with virtual characters powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While the app seeks to cash in on the hype surrounding AI chatbots, its expensive premium subscription is a downside. However, targeting a younger demographic with an experience that feels like messaging may help make its chatbots more accessible than OpenAI’s website.
