Google has officially opened its largest campus in India, Ananta, in Bengaluru’s Mahadevapura area. The 1.6-million-square-foot facility is one of the tech giant’s largest offices globally and represents a major milestone in Google’s commitment to India.
Named after the Sanskrit word for “infinite” or “limitless,” Ananta is designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. The facility, built by Bagmane Tech Park, was completed over six years, with an additional 11 months of customization for Google’s needs. The campus has a seating capacity of over 5,000 employees, while Google’s total workforce in India has surpassed 10,000, making it one of the company’s largest employee bases outside the U.S.
Ananta is expected to play a key role in Google’s AI-first approach, which was first adopted six years ago. Preeti Lobana, Vice President and Country Manager at Google India, emphasized that India is not only a talent powerhouse but also a country where AI-driven innovations can make a global impact. She stated that Ananta symbolizes Google’s ambition to push the boundaries of AI development and technological transformation.
Google’s Vice President of Engineering at DeepMind, Anand Rangarajan, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that India has become a proving ground for complex problem-solving. He noted that Ananta’s establishment reinforces Google’s long-term investment in India’s digital future, as solving problems for Indian users often translates into solutions for global users.
The Bengaluru facility is expected to house teams working across Google’s key business verticals, including Android, Search, Play, Pay, Cloud, Maps, and Google DeepMind. It will serve as a hub for developing world-class products, strengthening partnerships, and solving complex challenges that impact millions of users, startups, and businesses in India and beyond.
Unlike conventional office spaces, Ananta is architecturally structured to promote teamwork, creativity, and well-being. The building is bathed in natural light, featuring an open-plan design that encourages interaction between teams. At the heart of the campus lies ‘Sabha,’ a communal space designed for meetings and knowledge-sharing.
Each floor is modeled after a city grid, allowing employees to navigate through a network of streets and neighborhoods that blend collaborative spaces with quiet nooks for focused work. Tactile flooring and braille signage have been incorporated to enhance accessibility for the visually impaired. The campus also features walking and jogging paths, providing employees with spaces for relaxation and informal discussions on the go.
Beyond workspaces, Ananta offers an array of employee-centric amenities, including a fully equipped gym, daycare center, cafeteria, and a lush mini-forest named ‘Aranya’. These additions reinforce Google’s commitment to fostering a healthy work-life balance.
In alignment with Google’s global sustainability goals, Ananta has been built with eco-friendly design principles. The campus recycles 100% of its wastewater, features on-site rainwater harvesting, and incorporates smart photochromic glass, which reduces energy consumption by adjusting to light conditions.
Additionally, most of the materials used for construction and interiors have been sourced locally, minimizing the environmental footprint. Ananta also boasts one of India’s largest smart glass installations, further reducing power usage while ensuring optimal lighting and temperature control.
Google’s journey in India spans over 20 years, during which the company has played a pivotal role in technological advancements across various sectors. Google’s AI initiatives in India have already made an impact, from AI-powered flood forecasting to early tuberculosis detection models and financial inclusion through Google Pay.
