Google Introduces Generative AI Capabilities in Search Feature for Indian Users

Google has initiated an opt-in experiment in India by launching Generative AI capabilities on its search platform, focusing on bilingual users of the service. This new feature, known as the Search Generative Experience, is available in both English and Hindi, with the primary goal of enhancing the search experience for users. Puneesh Kumar, General Manager of Google Search, India, explained that this is the first step towards creating a supercharged search platform that simplifies understanding topics, uncovering new insights, and streamlining tasks.

Kumar stated, “We’re envisioning a supercharged Search that does the heavy lifting for you so you’ll be able to understand a topic faster, uncover new viewpoints and insights, and get things done more easily. The Search Generative Experience is the first step we’re taking in this journey, and part of our vision to make Search radically more helpful. We’re excited to bring this to India, and look forward to receiving feedback and iterating on the experience alongside our users over the next few months.” With the introduction of AI-enabled search capabilities, users will now receive key information in response to their queries, along with the option to delve deeper into the topic. Moreover, context will seamlessly carry over from one question to the next, enhancing the intuitive learning process.

Google has also tailored specific features for Indian users, including the ability to switch between English and Hindi, utilize text-to-speech functionality for listening to responses, and ask follow-up questions using voice commands (which will be available soon). Despite these improvements, Google has reassured users that search ads will remain consistent and continue to appear in ad slots, clearly labeled as “Sponsored.”

Globally, Google is experimenting with multimedia links within its Search Generative Experience, aiming to surface more images and videos in response to user queries. In the Indian context, the language will play a crucial role in maintaining Google’s dominance in the search market against competitors like Microsoft.
