GitHub lays off more than 140 employees in India

According to reports, GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft, has let go of 142 individuals from its engineering team in India. The entire engineering team, consisting of hundreds of engineers, was reportedly asked to leave the company. As part of their severance package, the affected employees have been given two months’ pay, as reported by Business Today.

In addition to the severance pay, the employees who were laid off from GitHub’s engineering team in India were reportedly required to sign a non-disclosure agreement to receive their benefits. The company confirmed this development to YourStory, stating that the job cuts were necessary as part of a reorganization plan announced in February. GitHub explained that the decision was made to safeguard the health of the business in the near term and enable investment in the company’s long-term strategy.

 

As part of its cost-cutting measures, GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft, announced in February that it would be reducing its global workforce of more than 3,000 employees by 10%. The company also announced a hiring freeze until further notice during the same month.

On February 9, GitHub’s CEO Thomas Dohmke sent an email to the company’s employees in which he announced several tough decisions aimed at safeguarding the business’s short-term health and enabling long-term investments. These decisions included letting go of some of the company’s staff and implementing new budgetary adjustments. Microsoft purchased GitHub, a popular Git-based platform for sharing and collaborating on code, in 2018 for $7.5 billion in stock.
