Elon Musk Announces Plan to Launch a Competitor to Microsoft-Backed ChatGPT

Elon Musk announced on Monday his plans to launch a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform called “TruthGPT” to rival Microsoft and Google’s offerings. In his statement, Musk accused Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the creator of popular chatbot ChatGPT, of teaching AI to deceive and becoming a “for-profit” organization that is closely associated with Microsoft. Musk’s TruthGPT aims to challenge these companies in the AI space.

In an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News Channel, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk accused Google co-founder Larry Page of disregarding AI safety concerns. Musk announced his plans to launch an AI platform named “TruthGPT,” which he described as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that would strive to comprehend the universe’s essence. According to Musk, TruthGPT could be the safest option and less likely to pose a threat to humanity.

Elon Musk revealed his intention to create a third option in the AI sector, saying that the reason for this is the delay in the industry’s development. Reuters reached out to Musk, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Larry Page for comments but did not receive immediate responses. According to sources familiar with the matter, Musk has been hiring AI researchers from Google’s parent company Alphabet to establish a startup that would compete with OpenAI. In a recent state filing, Musk registered a new firm called X.AI Corp in Nevada, with himself as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, as a secretary.

Despite Elon Musk and a group of AI experts and industry executives calling for a six-month halt in developing systems more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4, he continues to pursue the development of his AI platform, TruthGPT. This move comes after Musk has repeatedly warned of the potential risks posed by AI. During an interview with Tucker Carlson, Musk reiterated that AI is more dangerous than other industries prone to human error, such as aircraft design or car production.

Elon Musk continues to voice his concerns about the potential risks associated with AI, stating that it has the power to destroy civilization. During an interview, Musk warned that super-intelligent AI could manipulate public opinion through its exceptional writing abilities. Over the weekend, he revealed that he met with former US President Barack Obama during his presidency and urged Washington to promote AI regulation. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but resigned from the board in 2018 to focus on his other ventures, Tesla and SpaceX. At the time, he tweeted that he left OpenAI partly because of competition for the same personnel and differences in vision between him and the OpenAI team.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, added Twitter to his list of ventures after purchasing the social media platform for $44 billion last year. During an interview, Musk stated that he now values Twitter at less than half of its acquisition price. In contrast, Microsoft announced a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI in January, further escalating the competition between Microsoft and Google in the AI industry and spurring a race for AI funding in Silicon Valley.
