BYJU’S Affirms Continuation of 262 Tuition Centers Amid Reports of Shutdowns

In the wake of swirling rumors regarding the closure of its tuition centers, BYJU’S, the prominent edtech company, has come forward with a clarification. The company asserts that 262 of its tuition centers have successfully transitioned into their third year of operations, refuting claims of widespread shutdowns.

A recent report by The Captable suggested that BYJU’S intended to shutter 200 offline tuition centers out of its 300 nationwide, as part of a cost-cutting initiative. This move followed the closure of 50 centers in February. However, BYJU’S spokesperson rebuffed these assertions, highlighting the company’s commitment to its students and its evolving approach to education.

In a statement released on Friday, the spokesperson emphasized, “Contrary to these claims, nearly all BYJU’S Tuition Centres continue to serve students across India, gearing up to set new benchmarks in hybrid learning, which brings together the best of offline and online learning.”

The statement continued, “Ninety percent of its tuition centres, i.e., 262 out of 292, will continue to function in this novel hybrid model, integrating the best and the latest technology in the coming years. Most of our current students have already signed up for the next academic year (2024-25).”

BYJU’S clarified its strategy, focusing on operational efficiency and restructuring in select tuition centers to align with its long-term vision. Despite recent challenges, including a liquidity crisis and legal disputes with investors, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to providing quality education.

Just a week ago, BYJU’S instructed its vast workforce of over 20,000 employees to transition to permanent remote work arrangements, a decision reportedly influenced by ongoing challenges within the organization.

However, amidst an NCLT case involving key investors, BYJU’S faces financial constraints, leading to an inability to pay full salaries to employees for the month of February.
