Bhavish Aggarwal’s Krutrim Secures $50 Million, Emerges as India’s First AI Unicorn

Krutrim, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) start-up founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, the visionary behind Ola, has achieved the milestone of becoming India’s first AI unicorn, raising $50 million in its latest funding round at a valuation of $1 billion. Matrix Partners India and other leading investors led the funding round, marking a significant moment in Krutrim’s journey.

Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and Chairman of Krutrim, expressed enthusiasm about the accomplishment, stating, “India has to build its own AI, and at Krutrim, we are committed to building the country’s first complete AI computing stack. We are thrilled to announce the successful closure of our first funding round, which not only validates the potential of Krutrim’s innovative AI solutions but also underscores the confidence investors have in our ability to drive meaningful change for the world.”

Krutrim, meaning ‘artificial’ in Sanskrit, is set to revolutionize the AI landscape with its unique offerings. The funding secured in this round will be instrumental in accelerating Krutrim’s global expansion and furthering its mission to transform the field of artificial intelligence.

The AI unicorn is set to introduce two models: the base model, Krutrim, trained on 2 trillion tokens and unique datasets, and the more advanced Krutrim Pro, scheduled for launch in the next quarter, boasting enhanced problem-solving and task execution capabilities.

One of Krutrim’s notable features is its proficiency in 22 Indian languages, with the ability to generate content in around 10, including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam. During the launch, Aggarwal demonstrated an AI chatbot powered by Krutrim, showcasing functions similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

The base model of Krutrim has been trained on over two trillion tokens of data for Indian languages, making it a leader in incorporating around 20 times more Indic tokens than any other existing model. The Krutrim team operates across India and the Bay Area in the United States.
