Betterplace Acquires TROOPERS to Expand Gig Fulfilment Capabilities in Southeast Asia

BetterPlace, the Bengaluru-based frontline workforce management platform, has acquired Malaysian talent solutions firm TROOPERS for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will help BetterPlace expand its presence in Southeast Asia, where the demand for gig workers is predicted to quadruple over the next five years. BetterPlace will integrate TROOPERS’ gig matching and rostering features into its Software as a Service (SaaS) platform.

This is BetterPlace’s second acquisition in 2023. It acquired MyRobin, an Indonesian blue-collar workforce fulfillment platform, earlier this year. The acquisition of TROOPERS will enable BetterPlace to tackle several gaps in the gig economy space. BetterPlace’s comprehensive SaaS platform, combined with TROOPERS’ innovative flexi-talent solutions, will enable enterprises to tackle challenges such as high attrition rates, escalating labor and management costs, and skilled workforce shortages.

The integration of TROOPERS’ proprietary gig matching algorithms into BetterPlace’s platform will also help frontline workers optimize their earning potential. In Malaysia alone, 84% of hiring managers prefer hiring gig-workers.

Pravin Agarwala, Co-founder and Group CEO of BetterPlace, said, “Southeast Asia is expected to see significant growth in demand for gig workers in the next five years, with the gig economy growing by 31% since 2017, well ahead of the growth in the conventional workforce.”

Joshua Tan, Co-founder and CEO at TROOPERS, said that the company was started to address talent shortage and workforce productivity for enterprises while creating better working conditions for workers in Malaysia. “Majority of the gig workforce in Southeast Asia is informal, making it difficult for workers to discover supplementary jobs or increase their earning potential,” he added.

TROOPERS was founded in 2017 and has enabled 50,000 gig workers in Malaysia to find livelihood opportunities. It has about 180,000 users on its app.
