Indian retailers demand government probe into Amazon following allegations of malpractice

Outrage erupted after a Reuters investigation on Amazon alleged that the e-commerce colossus had systematically copied products from Indian retailers and deliberately rigged search results on the platform to promote Amazon brands at the expense of other retailers as part of a formal strategy. While the company has denied all such claims, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), a representative body of over 80 million Indian retailers, is demanding that the Indian government launch an investigation into the matter.

“Amazon is causing a great disadvantage to the small manufacturers. They are eating the cake that is not meant for them,” commented Praveen Khandelwal of CAIT in a conversation with Reuters.

American Democrat, Elizabeth Warren has also called for breaking up Amazon and said in a tweet, “These documents show what we feared about Amazon’s monopoly power — that the company is willing and able to rig its platform to benefit its bottom line while stiffing small businesses and entrepreneurs.” She added, “This is one of the many reasons we need to break it up.”
