Hoopr: Revolutionizing Music Licensing for Brands and Empowering Independent Artists

Mumbai-based startup Hoopr offers copyright-safe music solutions for creators and businesses, ensuring fair compensation for independent musicians.

Introduction

In the evolving digital landscape, content creators and brands often face challenges in sourcing music that is both copyright-compliant and culturally resonant. Hoopr, a Mumbai-based startup founded by Gaurav Dagaonkar and Meghna Mittal in 2022, addresses this gap by providing a music licensing platform that offers copyright-safe tracks from renowned labels and independent artists alike.

The Genesis of Hoopr

Gaurav Dagaonkar’s journey into the music industry began with his debut album College Days in 2008. His subsequent work as a music director and composer in Bollywood exposed him to the complexities of music licensing. A pivotal moment occurred when one of his tracks, centered on women’s empowerment, was used by brands during Women’s Day campaigns without proper compensation. This experience highlighted the need for a structured system to license music for digital content, leading to the inception of Hoopr.

Hoopr’s Offerings and Growth

Hoopr’s platform caters to both creators and businesses, offering a vast catalog of copyright-safe music. Creators can choose from subscription plans starting at ₹1,799 annually for 20 downloads per month, scaling up to ₹9,899 for unlimited downloads. Businesses have tailored packages, with options like ₹19,999 for 100 downloads monthly. The platform boasts a user base of approximately 395,000 creators, including prominent names such as Ashish Vidyarthi Actor Vlogs, Flying Beast, and Mr Indian Hacker.

Beyond individual creators, Hoopr has expanded its reach to over 1,900 brands, including major players like Himalaya, The Man Company, and IPL teams such as Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. These brands utilize Hoopr’s music for various campaigns, ensuring compliance with copyright regulations.

Empowering Independent Artists

A core principle of Hoopr is to ensure fair compensation for artists. The platform collaborates with approximately 2,500 independent musicians, offering upfront payments for their compositions. Once a track recoups its production costs through licensing, the revenue is split equally between Hoopr and the artist. This model not only supports artists financially but also encourages the creation of diverse and high-quality music.

Additionally, Hoopr has partnered with 21 music labels, including YRF Music, Saga Music, and Turnkey Music, to integrate a broader range of tracks into its catalog. This collaboration allows users to access songs from popular artists like Diljit Dosanjh, Neha Kakkar, and Sidhu Moose Wala.

Future Endeavors

Looking ahead, Hoopr aims to expand its offerings through its content arm, ‘Songfest,’ which has already collaborated with brands such as Mars Wrigley, Nestle, BharatPe, Hike, and Magicpin. The company is also exploring opportunities to integrate artificial intelligence to streamline music discovery and enhance user experience.

Conclusion

Hoopr stands at the intersection of technology, music, and entrepreneurship, providing innovative solutions for digital content creators and businesses while championing the rights and recognition of independent artists. As the digital content ecosystem continues to grow, platforms like Hoopr play a pivotal role in shaping a fair and sustainable music licensing landscape.
