Ecommerce startups Flipkart and 1mg register surge in demand following spike in Covid cases


E-commerce healthtech startups such as Flipkart and 1mg have reported that the recent surge in the Covid-19 cases paired up with the new variant of omicron have led to a massive surge in the demand for various Covid essentials such as oximeters, respiratory kits as well as testing kits.

Flipkart spokesperson reported that the oximeters and test kits saw a surge of over 4.4X and 12X respectively in the metro cities. On the other hand, Tata Digital backed 1mg reported that the sale of testing kits grew five fold whereas that of oximeters grew four fold and the sale of thermometers and respiratory masks doubled in the first week of January as against the last week of December.

The company officials have also revealed that they have seen a massive surge in the demand for immunity boosters and vitamin supplements in this week of January.

The Head of ePharmacy at Tata 1mg, Prateek Verma said, “They’re growing at a rate of 50 percent week on week. Our overall sales have seen a growth of around 40-50 percent in the last couple of weeks. We are able to service most orders being placed, since we have been building up capacity in advance. We have a lot more labs as well as pharma capacity today than during the last wave, and hope it will help.”

Subsequently, Mylab Discovery Solutions that manufactures CoviSelf revealed that the states of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh happen to be the top demand pullers of the Covid testing kits. Further, the company MD has reported that there has been a 500 per cent jump in the sale of self test kits.
