Apple is finalizing a deal to pay approximately $1 billion per year to integrate Google’s advanced Gemini AI model into its upcoming major upgrade of the Siri voice assistant, Bloomberg reports. Apple will run this advanced AI on its Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring user data privacy by keeping it separate from Google’s infrastructure.

Apple evaluated several AI platforms earlier this year, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, but ultimately selected Google Gemini for its combination of power, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The new Siri, internally codenamed “Linwood” and expected to launch with iOS 26.4 in spring 2026, aims to provide more intelligent and context-aware user interactions.

Despite this significant partnership, Apple continues to develop its own in-house AI models, with ambitions to deploy a 1 trillion parameter cloud-based AI system for consumer applications in the near future. This move is viewed as a temporary measure while Apple ramps up its proprietary AI capabilities.

The partnership is expected to remain behind the scenes, unlike Apple’s long-standing deal with Google making it the default search engine on Safari. This collaboration underscores Apple’s acknowledgment of the lag in AI competitiveness and its commitment to catch up through strategic alliances.
