AI Lab Press Release

Microsoft, NUS, AMD launch AI lab in Singapore

Microsoft, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and AMD have jointly launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) lab in Singapore aimed at advancing cutting-edge AI innovations with a focus on real-world applications such as energy efficiency. This collaborative initiative underscores Singapore’s growing position as a regional hub for AI research, development, and talent cultivation.

Purpose and Focus of the AI Lab

The AI lab, launched alongside resource and carbon management solutions provider Univers, is designed to develop AI-driven solutions that help businesses enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The lab will target multiple sectors including energy and utilities, public and enterprise infrastructure, transportation and logistics, as well as manufacturing and industrial operations.

By leveraging Microsoft’s cloud and AI capabilities, AMD’s high-performance AI hardware for edge intelligence, and NUS’s academic expertise, the lab aims to create scalable AI applications with significant impact on sustainability and operational efficiency. The lab will serve as a center for prototyping, testing, and applying AI innovations within real industry settings.

Collaboration and Roles

Univers will lead the strategic direction, operations, and project delivery for the lab, partnering with Microsoft, AMD, and NUS, each contributing unique strengths. Microsoft brings advanced cloud infrastructure and AI research leadership; AMD provides powerful local data processing solutions useful for real-time analytics at the edge; and NUS offers deep research expertise and access to talent.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore supports the lab by advising on responsible and sustainable AI practices focused on trust and governance. This multi-stakeholder collaboration ensures that the AI innovations developed are ethical, efficient, and aligned with regulatory expectations.

Benefits for Students, Industry, and the Ecosystem

The lab collaboration includes opportunities for NUS students to gain hands-on experience with AI technologies tackling real-world challenges. Professor Bernard Tan, Senior Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Education at NUS, emphasized the importance of such partnerships to nurture the next generation of AI-ready talent.

For industries, the lab presents a pathway to leverage AI solutions to optimize energy consumption, improve sustainability outcomes, and boost competitiveness. Governments and enterprises in Singapore and beyond can benefit from these innovations as they pursue “green” initiatives and digital transformation goals.

Strategic Importance for Singapore

This AI lab aligns with Singapore’s broader national ambition to be a global leader in AI technology and sustainability. By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government, Singapore strengthens its innovation ecosystem while attracting investments and talent.

The lab also enhances Singapore’s position as a strategic hub for the development and application of AI technologies tailored to Asia-Pacific’s specific challenges and opportunities.
