After Swiggy, Zomato Launches Group Ordering Feature – All You Need to Know

Swiggy, one of India’s leading food delivery platforms, has introduced a new feature to enhance its service offering—Group Ordering. This function allows up to 40 customers to simultaneously place orders and add various items to a single cart, streamlining the process for group meals and parties.

In a social media post on LinkedIn, Swiggy shared the early success of the feature, stating, “Group Ordering on #Swiggy went live a few days ago and we saw 6% of all orders on the first weekend of release being made via the feature. The maximum number of users joining one cart so far was 17 (that must have been quite the fun little party). And the best part? The average order value via Group Ordering was 3.7x of our usual orders.”

Prior to this, customers who wanted to place a group order had to use a single device to add their preferred dishes. Now, Swiggy users can collaborate on the same cart simultaneously by sharing a link or a QR code, making the process more convenient. According to the company, the feature was launched to address what it described as a “party pain point.” Additionally, Swiggy sees this new function as a way to increase its average order values (AOVs), a key performance metric in the competitive food delivery market.

This move by Swiggy follows closely on the heels of a similar feature introduced by its main competitor, Zomato. On August 17, Zomato rolled out its own group ordering service, which allows users to add items to the same cart by simply sharing a link. Deepinder Goyal, co-founder and group CEO of Zomato, announced the feature on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “We’re gradually rolling it (the group ordering feature) out to all customers as we speak. In case the feature is available to you, please use it for your house party tonight, and tell us how it goes.”

As the competition between Swiggy and Zomato heats up, both companies continue to innovate and expand their offerings to capture a larger share of the market, making food ordering for groups easier and more efficient.
