Uber Revives Ride-Sharing with ‘Group Rides’ Feature for Common Destinations

Booking a cab ride can become quite a task when you and your friends are headed to the same place. You end up having to add multiple drop-offs individually, coordinate locations with your friends, and watch the fare increase. To alleviate this inconvenience, Uber has unveiled a new feature named “Group Rides” in India. This feature empowers users to share rides with up to three other individuals when journeying to a common destination. Uber’s fresh Group Rides feature not only offers an eco-friendly way to travel with friends but also a cost-effective one. According to the company, by utilizing this feature, riders can save up to 30 percent on their fare by dividing it among a maximum of three people.
Beyond the financial savings, Uber is also making an effort to reduce road congestion through Group Rides, thereby minimizing the number of cars on the road. This becomes especially beneficial when groups of friends or colleagues are en route to the same location.
Using the Group Rides feature is straightforward: riders just need to share their ride details via a messaging app. Once their friends are onboard, they can add their own pickup points. The driver will then pick up all the riders at their designated locations and take them to the shared destination.
Importantly, Uber emphasizes that driver earnings will not be negatively affected by Group Rides. Drivers will continue to earn the same amount based on the route they take, as they would with an Uber Go or Uber Premier ride.
Here’s how to book a Group Ride on Uber:
Open the updated Uber app and tap the Group Ride icon.
Enter your pickup and drop-off locations.
Review the booking details and tap Confirm.
Invite your friends to join the ride by sending them a link.
Allow your friends to add their own stops.
Wait for the driver-partner to arrive.
Once the driver-partner arrives, pick up your friends and head to your destination.
Nitish Bhushan, Director of Central Operations at Uber India, commented on the feature’s launch, stating, “We are always innovating for our customers and looking at ways to make travel more affordable and seamless. With Group Rides we are offering customers the option to save more while they are riding with people they know. Not only do riders save money and arrive at the common destination together, they also do the good deed of reducing vehicles on the road by getting more butts in fewer cars.”
Uber also emphasizes that driver earnings will not be negatively impacted by Group Rides. Drivers will continue to earn the same amount based on the route they take, as they would with an Uber Go or Uber Premier ride.
