Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announces insurance coverage up to Rs 4 lakh for gig workers

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a significant insurance coverage initiative for gig workers serving as delivery personnel in ecommerce companies during his budget speech in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The state government will provide an insurance facility of up to Rs 4 lakh, comprising Rs 2 lakh as life insurance and Rs 2 lakh as accident insurance, for these workers. The entire insurance premium will be covered by the government.

The insurance coverage aims to provide social security to gig workers in the unorganized sector, specifically those employed as full-time or part-time delivery personnel in popular ecommerce platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, and Amazon. This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring the well-being and protection of these workers.

Registered beneficiaries and their dependents will receive subsidies and benefits through the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, as stated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. This welfare board will play a key role in implementing the scheme and extending the necessary support to the eligible workers.

The announcement reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare and empowerment of gig workers and their families. By providing comprehensive insurance coverage, the state of Karnataka aims to offer financial security and peace of mind to these valuable contributors to the economy.
