Pratilipi Records INR 196 Cr Loss in FY22, Doubling from Previous Year


Pratilipi, a self-publishing platform headquartered in Bengaluru, witnessed a substantial rise in its operating revenue, soaring 41.5 times to INR 7.88 crore during the 2021-22 financial year from INR 0.19 crore in FY21. The company generates revenue mainly from its service offerings, which include content and premium subscriptions, as well as brand advertising.

Pratilipi, the self-publishing platform based in Bengaluru, experienced a significant revenue boost in FY22, earning INR 3.14 crore from subscription services, a notable increase from zero revenue in the previous fiscal year. The company’s brand advertising also witnessed a surge, generating INR 2.31 crore during the year, compared to INR 9.6 lakh in FY21. The platform’s total income, including other sources, rose 2.5 times to INR 14.36 crore from INR 5.76 crore in FY21. However, the revenue growth led to increased expenses, causing Pratilipi’s net loss to rise by 2.04 times to INR 196.44 crore in FY22, compared to INR 96.19 crore in FY21.

According to recent data, employee benefit expenses for a startup surged by 1.7 times from INR 16.82 Cr in FY21 to INR 28.91 Cr. These expenses typically include salaries, PF, gratuity, and other employee welfare costs. The significant increase in employee benefit expenses suggests that the startup expanded its workforce during the year.

Pratilipi, which was established in 2015 by Sankaranarayanan Devarajan, Rahul Ranjan, Sahradayi Modi, Prashant Gupta, and Ranjeet Pratap Singh, is a platform that unites writers and readers in 12 Indian languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and English. This self-publishing platform offers users the ability to publish stories, poems, and books in different formats, including audio and podcast. Pratilipi has secured $80.6 Mn in total funding so far and has received support from investors like Omidyar Network, WEH Ventures, and Nexus Ventures Partners.

A startup witnessed a 2.5X increase in total income, amounting to INR 14.36 Cr in FY22. However, its total expenses, including business promotion, legal and professional fees, rent, and IP development costs, also grew significantly, reaching INR 210.8 Cr in FY22. Pratilipi’s other expenses, which accounted for the highest share of overall expenses, surged 2.1X to INR 176.08 Cr in FY22 compared to INR 82.34 Cr in FY21.
