With Handpicked, Swiggy Enters the Premium Grocery Service

Swiggy, a leader in food and grocery delivery, has launched a second grocery chain named Handpicked. A pilot program for the foodtech has just begun in Bengaluru. It is currently an invite-only marketplace that sells high-end goods that are either imported or created locally.

Contrary to Instamart’s standard grocery delivery service, which can take anywhere between ten and fifty minutes depending on the city, the items mentioned on Handpicked will only be delivered the next day.

A representative who was informed of the situation told ET that “the goal is to establish a ‘Nature’s Basket’ in the cloud.” These products are difficult to locate in nearby shops or on online shopping platforms.

“Swiggy Handpicked, an invite-only offering from Swiggy, helps customers discover and purchase unique and interesting groceries ranging from global favorites to regional delights and local legends that are not easily accessible. Handpicked is currently under pilot with select users,” he added.

Handpicked will market either high-end domestically produced goods or imported goods, according to an ET article. For instance, it lists Cherry Cola, a Coca-Cola product that is sold in US markets. The e-commerce division has also added Kombucha, a product produced by regional start-ups in Gujarat’s Methi Khakhra and Bengaluru.

Swiggy recently acquired the Dineout platform, which allows users to pay for meals at restaurants and receive discounts. The Times Group formerly owned the brand. The unicorn in food technology recently revealed its intention to fire over 250 workers.

“We concluded our performance cycle in October and have announced ratings and promotions at all levels. As with every cycle, we expect exits based on performance,” it said to ET.
