Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, said he will resign as CEO as soon as he finds “someone foolish enough to take the job,” two days after users voted for him to leave in an online poll he sponsored. The 51-year-old billionaire had committed to following the results of a Twitter poll in which 57.5 percent of users voted “yes” to his resignation.
“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job. After that, I will just run the software and server systems,” Musk tweeted on Tuesday. Musk added the tweet to an earlier post on Sunday in which he asked an online poll if he should step down as CEO of Twitter. “We will closely follow the results of this survey,” he had stated.
According to CNN, over 17 million votes were cast in the survey, which began Sunday evening and finished early Monday morning, with the majority of respondents favor of in favor
Musk did not immediately respond to the results of the vote, instead declaring two days later that he will leave as soon as he finds someone foolish enough to take the job. He tweeted on Sunday, “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll”.
“As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for, as you might get it,” Musk added in a later tweet. After Musk asked his 122 million followers whether he should step down, 57.5 percent said yes.
Musk has already complied with Twitter polls. He’s fond of quoting the phrase “vox populi, vox dei”, a Latin phrase that basically means “the voice of the people is the voice of God”. Musk, who also runs Tesla and SpaceX, has been dogged by controversy since purchasing Twitter for USD 44 billion and taking over as CEO in late October. Musk also announced on Twitter that substantial policy changes would be voted on in the future. The poll comes as Twitter announces that it will shut down accounts that primarily promote rival social media services. Accounts would also be affected by the measure. Musk also stated on Twitter that big policy changes would be voted on in the near future. The poll comes as Twitter announces that it will deactivate accounts entirely dedicated to promoting rival social media services.
According to the corporation, the policy would also affect accounts that link to or contain usernames from platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post. However, cross-posting from other sites will be permitted. Twitter has already barred users from publishing certain links to Mastodon, the network to which many Twitter users migrated following Musk’s takeover.
The billionaire’s approach to content monitoring has also been criticised, with some civil rights organisations accusing him of encouraging hate speech and disinformation. On Friday, he reinstated a number of journalists he had suspended for allegedly sharing location data about him, a move that was condemned as an infringement on press freedom by the EU and the UN.
