Google India deleted 6.47 lakh content pieces in September 2022

Google, a US-based tech giant, removed a total of 647,177 content items/URLs from India after receiving user complaints and automatic identification. In order to stop the spread of bad content, such as child sex abuse and violent extremist propaganda, it actively removed 547,431 content pieces from the site.
According to the company’s monthly transparency report for September 2022, it received 30,753 complaints from individual users in India, of which 93.5% were about copyright violations, 4% were about trademark infringement, and the remaining complaints dealt with issues with counterfeit goods, the law, defamation, and impersonation.

Following its community infraction standards, content policies, or local authority regulations, Google responded to these complaints by removing 99,746 content pieces. Due to the possibility of numerous things in a single complaint, there are more actionable items than complaints overall.
94% of these content pieces were removed due to copyright violations, while 5.8% were removed due to trademark violations. Google received 37,282 complaints in August; in response, it took action on 1,38,332 pieces of content and 5,51,659 pieces of content based on automatic detection.
In related news, India’s competition authority CCI is giving Google more scrutiny. For abusing its market dominance and engaging in anti-competitive behaviour, Google was fined INR 2,274 Cr. Additionally, it has temporarily stopped enforcing the in-app billing policy in India.
Social media networks with more than 5 million users are required to file monthly compliance reports under India’s IT Rules for Digital Intermediaries. So, in addition to Google, other companies like Meta, Twitter, WhatsApp, Sharechat, and others also release monthly compliance reports.
While Twitter removed 54K+ accounts and took action on 134 postings between August 26, 2022, and September 25, 2022, WhatsApp banned 2.6 million accounts in September 2022.3.07 billion posts on Facebook and 30 million posts on Instagram totalled 3.37 billion actions by Meta in September 2022. It got 587 complaints through the grievance procedure, with the most common one being “account has been hacked.”
