Withings launches an even smarter scale to measure you from top to toe

Your scale has been able to tell you more than your weight for some time, and Withings has been a leader in that regard (since 2009). Today, the company announced the Withings Body Scan. This continues the company’s quest to measure selected brands. In addition to body weight, the $ 299 glass tablet promises to get EKG, measure partial body composition, and track neural activity. The
scale promises a home ECG, so the device needs to go through a stricter FDA approval process. The same process significantly delayed the arrival of the company’s ScanWatch, which offers EKG features on the wrist, compared to its launch in Europe on the US coast.
The new BodyScan adds some funky new features to the familiar Withings scale. This product, which includes four weight sensors, promises weight accuracy of up to 50 grams (or an impressive 0.025% accuracy for a 200 pound person). The device has 14 ITO electrodes on the platform and 4 stainless steel electrodes on the retractable handle. Together, these sensors collect data for 6-lead ECG and segmental body composition analysis.

Body Scan promises daily analysis of health related data such as heart rate, “vascular age” and EKG measurements above. Multiple electrodes mean that Body Scan can perform fun party tricks, such as measuring whole body composition using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Body scans can measure water percentage, visceral fat, muscle, and bone mass in addition to the standard body fat percentage that may have been seen on previous scales. In addition, we promise to be able to provide more detailed measurements of individual parts of the body, such as the trunk, arms and legs. In connection with the company’s other products, such as sleep trackers under mattresses, smart blood pressure monitors, temperature sensors, and the ever-growing smart health fitness sensors, Body Scan is a clear brand addition.
