MS University researchers have patented a bench design that is easy to sanitize and maintains a physical separation between occupants.
The bench was designed by researchers at the faculty of family and community sciences in consideration of the large crowds that will be at various public places once the curbs are lifted. “During the lockdown, we were deliberating about how social distance can be maintained at institutions and public places. So, we came up with this design which can keep a distance between two people and will also be easy to sanitize,” said Dr. Sarjoo Patel, assistant professor. The patent for this design was secured by Patel, Fatema Dahodwala, a teaching assistant, and Ph.D. student Khyati Trivedi.
Aluminum makes the bench easily sanitized, while foam and rexine are used to make the bench cushions. “There is a distance of one meter between the two sets and we have placed hooks so that people can hang their bags, bottles, and other valuables without touching any of the surfaces,” Patel said. The bench can be placed in places such as railway stations, bus stations, hospitals, airports, and offices.
