BotLab Dynamics, the IIT-Delhi startup that put on a 1,000-drone performance at the Republic Day Beating Retreat ritual, put on another 3D drone exhibition on Monday. This time, though, it was for V Ramgopal Rao, the institute’s leaving director. And, it was a surprise.
Rao, who has been in charge for six years, took to Twitter to express his gratitude, writing, “Touched by their gesture.”
The Indian startup’s great achievement once more grabbed the globe by storm as over 1,000 drones, sparkling in all colours, lit up the sky over Lutyens’ Delhi during the Beating Retreat Ceremony.
Botlab Dynamics, a start-up incubated by IIT Delhi and currently led by Tanmay Bhunkar, Anuj Kumar Barnwal, and Dr Sarita Ahlawat, created, developed, and produced the 10-minute drone light display.

At NorTech, Udhampur, BotLab Dynamics presented a swarm of ten drones with obstacle avoidance skills to the Army. It went on to get the Prime Minister’s award and a Rs 1.5 crore iDEX grant for R&D.
The 1,000 drones were deployed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence or the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ as part of the government’s ‘Make in India’ project. Botlab Dynamics is developing cutting-edge drone technologies such as swarming and drone light shows using in-house built components from the ground up.
BotLab Dynamics has developed technology that allows many drones to fly in intriguing spatial and temporal formations concurrently and independently. BotLab created the technology from the ground up.
The objective of the BotLab, according to its creators, is for a single user to control thousands of drones at the same time. The team has created a comprehensive suite of drone light show options.
