Tesla Set to Produce Pedal-Free Autonomous EV, ‘Cybercab,’ Starting April 2026


Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will begin production of its groundbreaking Cybercab—a fully autonomous electric vehicle designed without pedals, steering wheel, or side mirrors—starting April 2026 at its Austin, Texas factory. This two-passenger robotaxi is specifically engineered for unsupervised, full self-driving operation, marking Tesla’s boldest step toward a driverless future.

Unveiled at the “We, Robot” event in late 2024, the Cybercab aims to optimize the lowest cost-per-mile autonomous mobility by removing traditional human driving controls and focusing solely on autonomous navigation. The absence of pedals and steering wheel distinguishes it as fundamentally different from conventional EVs and Tesla’s existing lineup.

Tesla plans an ultra-fast automated production line capable of assembling one Cybercab every 10 seconds, targeting annual output of two to three million units—significantly outpacing standard production speeds. This efficiency is attributed to a manufacturing process comparable to smartphone assembly rather than typical automotive factory lines.

However, this vision faces regulatory challenges, as U.S. federal safety standards currently cap the number of vehicles without traditional controls at 2,500 units annually per manufacturer. Tesla’s chairwoman Robyn Denholm has acknowledged in interviews that a contingency plan may be in place to add steering wheels and pedals if regulators demand, transforming the Cybercab from autonomy-only to autonomy-first vehicle.

Tesla already operates a limited robotaxi service in Austin using Model Y SUVs equipped with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in an “unsupervised” mode, albeit with a Tesla employee onboard. The Cybercab is envisioned as a fully driverless vehicle deployed at scale, pending regulatory approvals.

The vehicle’s architecture features advanced compute hardware and sensors optimized for autonomous driving. It boasts a 200-mile range with a 35 kWh battery, supported by inductive charging technology. Tesla CEO Musk has touted the feasibility of “text and drive” soon, reflecting confidence in the FSD system’s capabilities.

The Cybercab project reflects Tesla’s strategic pivot away from piloting affordable personal EVs toward establishing a dominant position in the autonomous mobility and robotaxi market—a sector with immense growth potential driven by urban mobility demands and AI advancements.
