Swiggy Eyes On Diversifying Beyond Food & Grocery With A Discovery Platform ‘Minis’ For Sellers

Swiggy, one of the major food delivery apps, is all set to diversify outside of its core food delivery business. The company is looking forward to onboard local stores and D2C (direct to consumers) brands.

Founded in July,2014 by Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini. Apart from food, Swiggy also delivers groceries under the name of Instamart and provides an instant package delivery service called Swiggy genie.

Swiggy is said to enter the e- commerce business and is reportedly onboarding electronic merchants too. This is a case of another SoftBanked-backed company spreading out of its food delivery businesses.

“Not a hyperlocal play”,The platform is called Minis,Swiggy is testing this model of market with selected brands. It includes categories like electronics, jewellery and others. It seems that the orders would not be delivered by swiggy delivery fleet, rather the merchants themselves would do this, though it might use its own delivery fleet in the future.

According to some sources, the company planned to launch Bazaar- a social commerce platform but the idea is supposed to evolve to Minis. This market idea has arrived at a time when the food business has declined. Swiggy however has started to focus on its grocery business and has committed $700 Mn for it. Zomato, another food delivery platform has also seen a decline in its gross order value.

The Gross merchandise value of swiggy is expected to touch $1 billion in three quarters whereas the food delivery businesses had already touched the zenith of $3 billion in GMV run rate( company’s current revenue in a certain period).

“We’re currently piloting a platform named Minis on Swiggy that enables D2C brands, small businesses and individual entrepreneurs to showcase their offerings directly to lakhs of customers,”said Swiggy.
