An MBA graduate with nearly 15 years of professional experience launches a power sector startup and encourages others to roll the dice. After years of experience in the industrial services sector, Sankar Pitta, a 2007 Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics and 2009 MBA graduate, bravely transitioned to start with ezCONTRACT. His inquisitive attitude created the concept of ezCONTRACT after gaining experience in a variety of fields like sales marketing, business development, product management, and operations, cross functional teams and much more. His evolving personality inspires young entrepreneurs to be curious to learn and developing innovative ideas himself throughout his career. “Innovation is one thing which I always love and I always pursue it as my passion. That is where this idea of ezCONTRACT came up.” said Pitta. He also shared that during his work experience with various clients he noticed they are facing problems specifically on the industrial services segment. He learnt B2C businesses have seen rapid digital transformations, the aspiration is to solve complex issues of B2B businesses as well using technology

What is ezCONTRACT?

“In simple terms, ezCONTRACT is a marketplace which helps companies to find small subcontractors quick and easy,” says the Founder, Sankar Pitta. According to the official website of this startup, their story began in January 2020, when the main engineer on a major engineering project began looking for outsourced contractors to do crucial tasks. It took 12 days to select the ideal contractor, and another 3–4 days to conclude the financial talks and begin the construction for them. Time is of the essence in these projects. Finding a contractor for one such job took so much time that it put off the following series of events. The engineering project manager contacted various organizations and individual experts, but the process took a long time and there was no assurance of timely or high-quality delivery.

To address this issue, the ezCONTRACT team was established. The platform, which they developed as a group of engineers and businesspeople, allows firms and projects to connect with specialists and contractors.

With the help of this website, you can post the project specifications and quickly receive responses from pre-screened, competent professionals. Market Dynamics

When asked about market trends and possibilities, Pitta responded that the business operates in the infrastructure sector, where there are many potential for ezCONTRACT to expand, which is the primary economic driver. As their platform also supports the manufacturing industry, he also noted that there has been tremendous growth in that sector, which is a powerful impetus for them to carry on their venture.

Cycle of Evolution in the Industries

Considering Pitta’s experience in the variety of industries, he said, “Every manufacturing industry wants to go for industry 4.0 bringing in efficiencies in the manufacturing.” which made him think about bringing the efficiencies in the service side of the industry too. He also added that the industry was very nascent in technology adoption in the pre-COVID era.

Pandemic- a boon for ezCONTRACT

According to Pitta, the industry saw a significant digital change following COVID. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial to ezCONTRACT since it was embraced by a large number of clients because of the ease of access to digital ways of working and hiring  services. It was easier for the platform to simplify the complex contracting which otherwise took a lot of time to execute. “COVID helped to validate our idea,” added Pitta.

In the exclusive interview of Startup Story, the Founder, Sankar Pitta revealed that ezCONTRACT is a small team consisting of 6 members which included an experienced Co-founder, well-versed CPO and 3 more junior developers. He proudly claimed that the co-founder of their platform is certainly more experienced than him who worked in a variety of engineering consultancies, specifically railways and metros. While the CPO is experienced in full stack development of web and mobile applications integrating escrows or blockchain into the system and 3 junior developers helping to build the backend of the system.

Future Goals at ezCONTRACT

Pitta is ambitious and well-organized in terms of the startup’s future objectives. He added that there are already more than ten service categories online on the website, with a positive response from their clients. He intends to grow these categories to over 58 categories and services in the industry arena that they can conscientiously supply. “The list of categories is growing on a daily basis,” he said. He is willing to increase his services while focusing on specific categories that are his company’s strong suit. He also stated that the service business is currently unstructured, which allows his startup to grow as quickly as possible. Investment in infrastructure development is also mentioned in his ambitious objectives. As the company’s founder, he hopes to reach a billion dollars in income for the service sectors on GMV within the next five years, with more than a hundred service categories operating on their platform.

Challenges faced by the Founder and Co-founder

Sankar Pitta frankly admitted that he faced challenges while shifting to the domain for ezCONTRACT startup. They talked to the third-party service providers for understanding development in the industry which can be tricky and challenging for newcomers although the process was still unclear due to the immense use of jargons, it is when they decided to solve it on their own. The founder and co-founder went back to basics of coding to learn everything from HTML to PHP. Sankar Pitta stressed upon the fact of macro-learning and finally executing successfully. He asserted, “Learning never stops.”

Message for aspiring young entrepreneurs from the Founder

Throughout the exclusive interview with Startup Story Media, the founder felt motivated about his startup. When asked for a message to young entrepreneurs, he remarked, “Be curious and learn it by yourself. Don’t shy away from asking for help. You might not excel in every domain but you can hire people who are specialized in that domain.” He also suggested learning the basics of the domain you want to work in. “There are a lot of problems to solve in the country in different industries, there is no death of problems so pick your problem and solve it” Pitta further added.
