Retail Tech Startup Dukaan Lays Off 30% of Its Workforce – Including Sales and Account Managers, for Second Time in Six Months


Retail technology startup Dukaan reportedly laid off approximately 30% of its workforce, or around 56 employees, in a second round of layoffs within six months, according to sources familiar with the matter. The affected employees were mostly from the inside sales team and account managers, and were offered a severance package equivalent to two months’ salary. The startup is led by Suumit Shah.

Dukaan, previously focused on helping small and medium businesses establish an online presence, has now shifted its focus to helping D2C brands scale up. Founder Suumit Shah confirmed the recent layoffs and cited the change in focus as the reason for the job cuts. In September 2022, Dukaan also laid off around 23 employees for the same reason. Launched in June 2020, Dukaan is a no-code platform that allows merchants and SMBs to launch their ecommerce website within a few minutes.

Several D2C brands, including 10Club, Truke, Vu Televisions, HealthXP, and Uppercase, have switched to Dukaan, the main competitor of Shopify India, following Dukaan’s shift in focus to help D2C brands scale up. In 2021, Dukaan raised $12.4 million in its pre-Series A round, led by 640 Oxford Ventures, and saw participation from existing investors Snow Leopard Ventures, Lightspeed Partners, and Matrix Partners India.

Dukaan, which is based in Bengaluru, raised $6 Mn in seed funding from Matrix Partners India and Lightspeed India Partners before raising $12.4 Mn in a pre-Series A round led by 640 Oxford Ventures in 2021. The company is reportedly in talks to raise a Series A round. According to reports, Indian startups, including Dukaan, have laid off around 23,000 employees since the funding winter hit the Indian startup ecosystem in 2022. Notable D2C brands such as 10Club, Truke, Vu Televisions, HealthXP, and Uppercase have already switched to Dukaan from Shopify India, Dukaan’s main competitor.
