Recalling its 3K+ Units of Praise Pro Scooters announced by Okinawa Autotech

An incident has come up on social media where one of its dealership units in Tamil Nadu could be seen burning down to ashes after a reported fire in the company’s e-scooter, following electric two-wheeler maker Okinawa Autotech’s announcement of recalling 3,215 units of its Praise Pro Scooters.

On April 16, a video uploaded on Twitter captured the incident.

The entire showroom is reportedly gutted, though no casualties have been reported and locals helped to put out the fire.

On the latest EV fire at its dealership, Okinawa Autotech is yet to make a statement.

The electric two-wheeler maker said last week that in order to fix battery-related issues, starting April 16, in the first such incident in India, it will voluntarily recall  3,215 units of its Praise Pro Scooters.

Okinawa said that this is part of its comprehensive power pack health check-up camps and, the scooters would be checked for loose connectors or any damage and at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India,it will be repaired at free of charge, as part of the recall.

This voluntary campaign comes in the wake of the recent electric vehicle (EV) scooter fire incidents led by the company. In March, when its EV scooter at Tamil Nadu’s Vellore caught fire claiming the lives of two, including a 13-year old girl, Okinawa’s name came up in an incident.

Under the segment of its lithium-ion high-speed scooters, the Praise Pro Scooters that would now be recalled fall, which also include IPraise+, Ridge+ and OKHI-90.

Incidentally, just a few days after NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant asked EV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in order to voluntarily recall batches involved in the EV fire incidents, Okinawa is taking this step.

In the last few days, after a video of an Ola Electric scooter catching fire went viral on social media, EV fires have caught major media attention. Following that, in a similar incident Okinawa’s name came up.

Earlier, ebikes burst into flames in the middle of the roads have also been seen by other players such as PureEV, HCD India, Jitendra EV. An Okinawa scooter also reportedly caught fire in 2021. An ePluto scooter built by Pure EV was also seen in flames in Hyderabad in the same year.

In fact, a team of independent experts has been deputed by the center last month in order to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, the Indian EV market is expected to grow to $152.21 Bn by 2030, which was about $220.1 Mn in 2020, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 94.4%, states a research report.
