Meta lays off 600 employees from its AI division

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has reportedly laid off 600 employees from its AI division. The move reflects the company’s efforts to realign resources and streamline its focus on key AI initiatives amid evolving priorities in artificial intelligence development.

The affected employees were part of teams working on various AI research, product, and infrastructure projects. Meta has stated that it is providing support and transition assistance to impacted staff, including severance packages and career guidance.

This restructuring comes at a time when tech companies globally are reassessing AI investments, balancing rapid innovation with financial sustainability. Meta continues to invest in AI technologies, particularly in machine learning, generative AI, and AI-driven social experiences, but the company aims to optimize teams for strategic projects.

Industry analysts note that while layoffs are difficult, this may allow Meta to focus on high-priority AI initiatives such as augmented reality, content moderation, and advanced language models, ensuring resources are aligned with the company’s long-term AI roadmap.
